Hillary Clinton vs Barack Obama
There’s a lot of chatter about “who’s winning online” in the US Presidential election. Pundits are claiming it’s the first presidential campaign to really be fought online (just as they said last time & the time before). Last week there was a Youtube debate, shortly there’s a Yahoo debate. So I thought I’d take a quick look at some of the freely available stats to see how Hillary Clinton & Barack Obama are each faring online.
Barack Vs Hillary – the ‘orange’ cells are the winners:

So there you have it – 100% official – Barack is winning 8 to 4. Seriously though, there are some surprising bits in there.
Strategic Differences
- Hillary doesn’t appear in Technorati, despite having a huge campaign budget & (presumably) spending a big chunk of money on her blog. I assume this is a technical issue, but it’s quite an odd omission.
- Hillary’s not on Twitter (actually there was an account, but it seemed to have been totally abandoned)
Surprises
- BarackObama.com has been around 1/3 of the time HillaryClinton.com has, but Yahoo lists far, far more inbound links (about 30% greater, though those numbers do fluctuate day to day).
- Barack was showing a massive 80% month-on-month visits increase according to compete.com . Surely that must be a glitch, or just some dodgy stats?
- Barack is way ahead on del.icio.us entries, which should be a decent indicator of acceptance among the people. But the other key indicator of that – blog mentions – puts Hillary ahead. Could it be many of those are negatives? Or perhaps Hillary is just more-comment-worthy while Barack has more backers? Or perhaps those who talk about Hillary just do it more often?
